Shoulder Pain:

What It is and How to Treat It with Chiropractic Care
You might experience soreness after painting, lifting items, or playing a sport—anything that requires you
to lift your arms, especially overhead. Another very common complaint is “my shoulder pain wakes me up
at night”. This pain can occur whether or not one lies on the painful shoulder, opposite side or on their back.
Patients cannot find a comfortable sleeping position. Or you may not remember any specific injury or
movement, but you still feel pain in your shoulder. So why does this area hurt?
A common cause of shoulder pain is soreness of the tendon in the rotator cuff. This is the part of the
shoulder helps with circular motion. Another common cause is soreness of the sub acromial bursa (a sac of
fluid under the highest part of the shoulder).
Let’s explore some of the most common shoulder problems patients experience!

Common Shoulder Problems
Some of the typical types of shoulder pain issues include:
•Tendonitis
•Strains
•Dislocated shoulder
•Bursitis
•Sprains
•Night Time Shoulder Pain
Night time shoulder pain is common in patients with preexisting shoulder conditions such as tendinitis,
bursitis, tendinitis, impingement, rotator cuff tears and capsulitis. All of these conditions cause shoulder
stiffness and inflammation.

•Rotator Cuff Injury
Rotator cuff injury is inflammation of the muscles that support the shoulder. This inflammation causes pain,
stiffness, and even weakness, spreading to the neck area. If you are unable to raise your arms over your head
or scratching your back, or if sleeping on that side is painful, you might have a rotator cuff issue. Some
patients who have damaged rotator cuffs may need chiropractic massage therapy to release trigger points,
which relaxes tight muscles in the armpit and shoulder. Your chiropractor may also suggest the use of a cold
laser therapy. Cold laser therapy allows the micro tears in the muscles to heal more quickly.

•Frozen Shoulder
Frozen shoulder occurs in about 2% of all adults, between the ages of 40 and 60. This condition is seen
more often in women than men, although the reason for this is unknown. Frozen shoulder is when the shoulder becomes so stiff and painful that a person either cannot move their shoulder/the shoulder appears
to be frozen in place. This happens when the connective tissue in the shoulder joint becomes thick and
tight, forming tough bands of tissue (adhesions). The reason is unknown. Many doctors suggest surgery to
remove the adhesions, but chiropractic care has been proven to be extremely effective in healing frozen
shoulder.

Treating Shoulder Pain
Passive Stretching for Stiffness
The majority of the the shoulder conditions that cause pain also cause shoulder stiffness. When shoulder
stiffness occurs a prolonged passive stretching program may be beneficial. These exercises routine needs to
be effective, safe and easy to do. The maneuvers do not need to be too forceful but they do need to be
prolonged.

Active Rest & Simple Range of Motion Exercise
During active rest, you can and should move your shoulder. The first step of rehabilitation therapy is simple
range-of-motion exercises. By bending over and moving (rotating) your shoulder in large circles, you will
help to avoid the serious complication of rotator cuff injury (sometimes called a frozen shoulder). In the
beginning of treatment, range-of-motion exercises typically involve resistance exercises using rubber
tubing or light dumbbells. The final step is resistance training with weight machines or free weights.

Aerobic Exercise
An aerobic exercise program will help improve the blood flow to the tendon or bursa. The blood flow will
help reduce soreness.

Chiropractic Care for Shoulder Pain
While many people believe that they either must live with shoulder pain or have surgery, the fact is that
comprehensive chiropractic is extremely effective in treating shoulder pain and restoring range of motion.
Your chiropractor will do a thorough exam and discover the root cause of your shoulder or arm pain, then
create a treatment plan to address the underlying issue.
Chiropractors begin by identifying and treating the actual cause of shoulder pain. Care is based on directing
the body to work together as a unit, shoulders and all. The shoulder is an integral joint and must be able to
function in cooperation with the spine, neck, and the rest of the body.
If you have to take a particular pain medication every day to get rid of a headache, it’s not working.
